Data is a good thing and essential for much of what we accompish every day. But it isn't the only thing. We also need humans in the mix - for intution, emotion, loyalty and more.
David Brooks wrote a NY Times column last week that frames a view of data that provides an example of that need. It's a reminder worth noting.
Brooks describes a conversation with a banker - not the heartless kind - who decided to ride out a crisis despite data pointing in the opposite direction. His decision was based upon trust and loyalty and values - the values based upon principles not dollars.
I don't always agree with Brooks. However, he is a smart and thoughtful guy who is willing to stretch his own understanding and help the rest of us to stretch ours.
That has value too.
